Tignanello 1971
/ #43961155Tignanello is a milestone for Tuscan enology. Meanwhile for being the first Sangiovese to be aged in barrique; the first modern red wine blended with non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet; among the first red wines in Chianti without white grapes.
Since 1975, in fact, Tignanello has been produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, after aging in barriques for about 12 months, the wine rests in the bottle for a further year of aging before being put on the market
In fact, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name planted on land that is located at a height between 350 and 400 meters above sea level, facing south-west and always kissed by the sun, of calcareous origin with tuffaceous elements , in one of the most beautiful areas of Chianti. So much so that the first production of this vineyard, in 1970, was placed on the market under the name "Chianti Classico Riserva vineyard Tignanello", also because it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak barrels. With the 1971 vintage it became a Tuscan table wine, called only Tignanello, with a label that has never been changed, and with the 1975 vintage the white grapes were totally eliminated, with an average annual production of 3-350,000 bottles. Since 1982 the composition has remained the same as it is today: 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Thus starting a sort of revolution which then led to the production of super Tuscany, with the creation of a style that was also of great cultural impact, given the appreciation that Tignanello immediately had on the US market. Of the numerous vintages of Tignanello - which is bottled only when the harvest is perfect, an experiment aimed at demonstrating that it has nothing to envy to the great French wines.
