In this ShareWine Masterclass, we dive deep into the prestigous world of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy and explore the appellation, its' famed vineyards, legendary wines and must-try producers!

Facts about Vosne-Romanée

The famous village and appellation is located north of Burgundy's main center, Beaune, in the upper part of Côte de Nuits, which is itself the northern part of the Côte d'Or.

However, Vosne-Romanée is far more than just a village in Burgundy. Despite its' small size, Vosne-Romanée stands as a towering epicenter of passion, perfection, and, above all, spectacular terroir in the world of wine.

There is no doubt that many phenomenal wines are produced in Vosne-Romanée. Common characteristics of these wines include elegance, depth, and remarkable aging potential.

The wines, which according to the appellation rules must be made from Pinot Noir, are often recognized by their aromas of violets, small crips red and dark berries, and a mix of spices famously referred to as "Vosne-spices" by enthusiasts. Try noticing this aromatic signature the next time you swirl a glass of wine from Vosne.

Additionally, the wines are known for their silky texture, which, combined with their profound depth, gives them a finesse and intensity like few other wines can compare.

World famous vineyards

The area boasts the largest concentration of Grand Cru vineyards within a single commune in Burgundy.

  • 73 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards

  • 57 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards

  • 99 hectares of Village vineyards

The expansive Grand Cru area includes six designated vineyards, of which the three most famous ones to know are:

  • Romanée-Conti
Commonly referred to as "Conti-Conti". A "monopole" vineyard solely owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. It is arguably the most famous vineyard in the world, despite its tiny size of only 1.8 hectares.

  • La Tâche
Also a "monopole" vineyard owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. It is slightly larger, covering 6.06 hectares.

  • Richebourg
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti also produces a magical wine from this vineyard, which spans 5.05 hectares. However, unlike the previous two, this vineyard is shared among 11 different owners.

The other three Grand Crus are:

  • Romanée-Saint-Vivant – 9.65 hectares

  • La Grande Rue – 1.65 hectares

  • La Romanée – just 0.85 hectares

Additionally, Vosne-Romanée is renowned for having six first-class Premier Cru vineyards located side by side. These are:

  • Aux Reignots

  • Aux Brûlées

  • Aux Malconsorts

  • Les Petits Monts

  • Les Beaux Monts / Beaumonts
