Ohn Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after his father's death) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice to the firm of Madeira merchants (Catanach and Murdoch), and remained until the expiry of his contract on the 11th . Leacock agreed and this marked the birth of the now world-famous company
Portugal although quite small, produces a large variety of wines ranging from light and sparkling Vinho Verde to full-bodied and tannic Port. Portugal is the fourth largest wine-producing region in Europe and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley in Portugal is the original and current home of the most beautiful port in the world. The valley extends from east of the city of Porto to the Spanish border and is the country's best-known wine region. Even the less appreciated DOCs such as Bairrada and Dão stand out for their fine and rustic reds.
